A Pair of Cuba-Headed Aid Sailboats Reported Missing following Setting Sail from the Coast of Mexico.
A comprehensive rescue and recovery operation is actively under way in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of unlocated boats carrying humanitarian supplies journeying from the Mexican coast to Cuba.
Military Search Operations Deployed
Authorities in Mexico has sent naval assets and search planes to search for the missing boats, which were transporting no fewer than nine total sailors, per a navy statement.
The ships had been scheduled to make landfall in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the statement clarified.
Context of Aid to Cuba
Cuba has leaned on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the island endures widespread nationwide blackouts.
"Both captains and crews are experienced sailors, and both vessels are fitted with suitable safety equipment and emergency beacons," a representative involved in the effort said.
The nine individuals on board are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.
"The group is working closely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.
Previous Aid Delivery
Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and officially received a different ship that had delivered 14 tons of donated goods to the nation.
That boat, dubbed "a new Granma" after the boat in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, carried solar panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, cycles and foodstuffs.
Larger Geopolitical Context
Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded attempts to bring critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a fuel embargo on the island nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since highlighted ""severe" supply shortages, with in excess of 50k surgical procedures called off in Cuba amid power shortages.
Foreign policy pressure have intensified in recent months, with statements from various representatives highlighting the complex situation regarding relations.
Reacting to previous statements, a high-ranking Cuban official stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."
Indications suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations were initiated, although their ongoing development remains unclear.
The naval forces stated it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its command to locate the boats and secure the well-being of the crews.
At this time, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
