A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
