The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
