We are verifying images and video posted earlier today that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is under way.

Our starting point to verify the location of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.

Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were captured.

We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
