Much like Storm Claudia tore through the northern region the prior day, City overwhelmed Manchester United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three-nil triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their championship potential as they consolidated their standing at the league summit.

Successive Defeats for United

This scoreline represented consecutive Women's Super League setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since last May, placing them seven points off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

Manchester United's capability to manage league and continental football with a small team has been a frequently analyzed subject since they qualified for the UCL. Looking at the calendar, it always seemed this was the period that would fully examine this fortitude. Sadly for the opposition, they seemed tired from start to finish, the landmark win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had tried to make changes with a a few alterations. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all added vigor, although the omission of the on-form Melvine Malard to the sidelines was questioned.

Manchester City, in opposition, have no such loading issues. Jeglertz made one adjustment from their most recent win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from injury.

Commanding Opening Period

Her passes were posing a threat and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg scrambled off the line.

United had a number of forays forwards, their straightforward approach giving them choices in the flanks but they could not challenge the City goalkeeper. City, meanwhile, controlled the ball, probing their rivals and trying to pull them out of their structure.

Scoring Spree

They turned chances into goals with almost thirty minutes played when Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A cross to the back post was nodded across goal by Shaw for Knaak to nod home. It was City’s 7th header of the season.

They extended their advantage with two more goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was able to advance through the center from defense, the pitch opened up for the hosts. The influential Kerstin Casparij received possession on the right side before delivering a precise low cross for Bunny Shaw to force home. Shortly later, they had a additional score after a rapid change in the ball saw Hemp allowed the room to drive a shot home from range.

After the Break

The most obvious change came from the United manager at the interval as Melvine Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the contest.
