Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
