Putin Assures Continuous Crude Oil Shipments to the Indian Nation in Rebuff of US Demands

In a defiant signal to Western nations, Leader Vladimir Putin has told PM Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to provide “continuous” deliveries of energy resources to India. These remarks came as the two leaders met in the Indian capital and affirmed their partnership were “immune to external pressure.”

A Signal For the Western Countries

The statement, delivered Friday, appeared to be a pointed rebuke at western countries, that have tried to pressure New Delhi into reducing its longstanding links with Moscow. The context follows previous Washington's moves, including the introduction of trade penalties targeting New Delhi over its acquisition of Moscow's energy exports.

“Russia is a reliable source of energy resources and all required for the development of India’s economy,” Putin remarked. “Russia is prepared to continue securing the uninterrupted flow of fuel for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, without naming energy specifically, supported the sentiment by noting that “energy security has been a robust and vital cornerstone of the India-Russia cooperation.”

Challenging American Pressure

In the lead-up to the talks, via a media interview, Putin had questioned Washington's stance regarding India's oil imports. Putin stated, “If the US has the right to buy our uranium, then why can't India enjoy the equivalent access?”

Putin's arrival was his first journey to India after the start of the situation in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi undertook a deliberate attempt to display that the personal rapport between the heads of state was undisturbed.

A Warm Reception

In a notable move, Modi personally greeted Putin upon his arrival. Both leaders exchanged a hearty embrace as longtime companions before enjoying a closed-door supper on Thursday evening.

He in his statement called India's alliance with Russia as “a beacon” and added it was “built on mutual respect and profound confidence.”

Expanding Bilateral Cooperation

The meeting produced multiple important deals regarding military and trade relations. A major outcome was the finalization of an strategic roadmap extending until 2030, which sets a goal to double commerce to $100bn annually by the target year.

Additionally pledged to recalibrate their defence ties. Even as Russia remains India's primary source of weapons, its share has reduced lately as India has sought diversify its procurement.

The joint statement emphasized cooperation in the joint production of sophisticated defence platforms, even if direct mention of deals for the Su-57 fighter jet were not made.

Overall, Russia and India reiterated that in the “current complex, tense, and uncertain geopolitical situation, the Indo-Russian partnership continue to be durable to external pressure.”
