The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Unilever Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
The original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he will personally create the controversial product within a personal series showcasing causes the company was prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators versus Corporate Owner
This latest development escalates the ongoing conflict among the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted that Unilever along with its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked their company from "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem for Support
The entrepreneur revealed via an Instagram video how he is creating a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions regarding the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, which mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement and Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales in the occupied West Bank.
The new product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company that was first established in 2016 to support former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts and Future Plans
The founder stated that he will develop other frozen dessert varieties that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by Unilever.
The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at the company recently, after many years with the organization, mentioning concerns that the company's autonomy was compromised following corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen remarked how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can achieve the social mission, the principles that established its foundation while upholding for decades," he explained to journalists.
