Vince Gilligan Shares He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... Currently.

The creative mastermind never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

As the debut season of the popular program wrapping up—and the next chapter officially in the works—the creative team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Fan Response

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”

“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.

The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan See the Conclusion of Pluribus?

So if the writers aren't taking cues by fan response, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a superior concept. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Then again, one could always use the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
